How a Spinning Squirrel Feeder Works
A squirrel climbs toward the corn. Its weight tips the arm, and the feeder turns. That’s the idea behind Whirl-a-Squirrel: the squirrel makes the movement happen.
Getting the balance right
The arm rotates around a central pivot. An adjustable counterweight helps set its resting position. Start with the assembly instructions for your model, then make small adjustments until the upper arm barely stays raised, as described in our FAQ.
Make adjustments only when no animals are on the feeder. Keep hands clear of the pivot and secure the counterweight as directed.
If the feeder isn’t spinning
- Look for obstructions. Check for branches, fences, or other objects in the arm’s path.
- Check the base. The pole should be upright and supported as shown in the instructions.
- Check the corn. A full cob on one holder and an empty cob on the other can change the balance.
- Check the counterweight. Adjust it a little at a time and check the resting position again.
Don’t force a stuck arm. If something is damaged or the movement still seems wrong, stop using the feeder and ask us for help.
What if squirrels haven’t found it?
A new feeder can take time to attract attention. The lower corn holder gives squirrels an easy place to find the food before exploring above. Watch from a distance and give them room. There’s no fixed timetable for a wild squirrel to try something new.
Keep it ready for the next visit
Check the base, fittings, and corn regularly. Remove spoiled food and debris, and follow the care instructions supplied with your feeder.
